The Butternut tree is really something special! Not only is it a striking shade tree, it's also a wonderful food source. Similar in appearance to Black Walnut, Butternut is sometimes called White Walnut because of the light colour of the bark and wood.

Pittosporum tobira is a species of flowering plant in the Pittosporum family known by several common names, including Japanese mock-orange and Japanese cheesewood. It is native to Japan but it is used throughout the world as an ornamental plant.

Another excellent native shrub for year-round interest. Arching branches with lobed leaves give Common Ninebark a mounded look. Five petaled flowers appear in dense, spirea-like clusters in spring, and give way to a multitude of reddish-pink.

Robinia pseudoacacia, commonly known as the Black Locust or False Acacia is a member of the pea family and has nitrogen-fixing bacteria on its root system; for this reason it can grow on poor soils and is an early colonizer of disturbed areas.

The native, wild Crabapple tree, Malus sylvestris, is an excellent hedging plant, commonly planted in mixed country hedges. It makes a decent, if unevenly shaped, ornamental tree for an average sized garden and it will also pollinate orchard apples.

A most handsome lime from NE Asia with really luxuriant, broad foliage: large, heart-shaped, with a slight pewter tinge, downy on expansion and greyish beneath. A specimen of this really stands out in the late Harry Hay's Tilia collection in Surrey.

Native to Korea and Russia, this linden is a medium sized shade tree that typically grows up to 22 m tall. It is similar in appearance to Tilia japonica except, in the words of Flora of China, it has "smaller leaves and bracts and a shorter cyme.

A deciduous tree native to China and Japan, it is overall an oval-canopied tree but some specimens can become quite widely spreading with sprawling branches. Its gray-brown bark exfoliates in vertical bands, adding winter and spring interest.

The Native Horse Chestnut tree, Aesculus hippocastanum, is large and spreading, suitable only for parks and big gardens. It will grow in any reasonably fertile soil and it is quite shade tolerant. Common Horse Chestnut trees can reach height of about 30m.

Jacaranda mimosifolia, the Blue Jacaranda, is native of South America, especially found in Brazil. This handsome tree grows in tropical low altitude flatlands. It can reach 30 meters high at its full potential, but it’s usually more around 20 meters.

Hairy stems that support an umbrella-like crown of feathery foliage, staghorn sumac displays a handsome red fruit spike and yellow, red and orange fall color. A deciduous, upright, colonizing large shrub, it is native to much of eastern North America.

The Oregon grape is an attractive evergreen shrub that is native to the west coast of North America. Its fruits are blue berries that are borne in clusters and look somewhat like grapes. It is unrelated to the true grapes, however.

The Oriental Planetree is a large, rounded and handsome shade tree. The cream coloured bark is quite attractive and is exfoliating. Its ornamental bark makes it an interesting specimen in a winter garden. A popular street tree.

The trees range from 40–60 feet (12–18 m) high with short trunk and round-topped head. The juice is milky and acrid. The roots are thick, fleshy, covered with bright orange bark.

Mock Orange looks like a giant bridal bouquet when it bursts into bloom in spring and summer. Hundreds of pure white flowers fill the yard with the sweet scent of orange blossoms. It is covered in dark green leaves. Grows in sun or shade.

Classic native hedging plant with medium green leaves which turn a lovely rich copper shade in autumn and persist all winter. Very tolerant of wind and shade and easy to trim into shape hence its popularity for hedging.

Umbrella Tree/Umbrella Magnolia (Magnolia tripetala) Deciduous. This Appalachian native tree gains its name from giant, jungle-like leaves; reaching 2 feet in length and nearly 1 foot across. There’s some shelter for ya!

Magnolia obovata, the Japanese bigleaf magnolia or Japanese whitebark magnolia, is a species of Magnolia, native to Japan and the adjacent Kurile Islands. It grows at altitudes near sea level up to 1,800 m in mixed broadleaf forests.

This deciduous tree grows to 40 feet tall and blooms in early spring with a profusion of white-tinged pink goblet to saucer-shaped blossoms that are 3 to 4 inches wide. Grow in moist, well-drained preferably acidic to neutral soil in sun or partial shade.

Rare in the east, abundant in the lower Ohio valley and middle of Mississippi valley. Reaches its largest size in southern Illinois and Indiana. Bark: Light brown, scaly; on young stems light brown, smooth.

The Red Oak grows rapidly and is tolerant of many soils and varied situations. It is native to the north eastern United States and south eastern Canada. The tree gets its name from the leaves rich autumn colouring when they turn to a rich red color.

Red buckeye, a native of the southeastern United States that produces brilliant red flowers, is the best buckeye for this region. It can be grown in all soil textures and is nearly pest-free. Its flowers, which last several weeks in spring.

The yew berry is also called greenwood or mahogany, it is a coniferous tree from the Yew family, the yew berry is quite attractive, has an unusual pyramidal crown, the main feature of the plant is its lifespan.

The wine grape variety is a hybrid of two varieties, which was obtained in a completely natural way, the berries are medium in size, have a black peel, which is covered with a specific wax coating on top.

Perennial woody vine. Native to Manchuria, northeastern China and Japan. The odoriferous pink or white flowers give way to bright red fruit which droops down in clusters from the vine. This is known as the many-flavored berry.

Corylus colurna (Turkish hazel) is a tree native to southeast Europe and southwest Asia, from the Balkans through northern Turkey to northern Iran. It is the largest species of hazel, reaching 25 m (82 ft) tall, with a stout trunk up to 1.5 m.

Bladder Senna Shrub (Colutea arborescens), also called "Bladders Tree" is a shrub in the family Fabaceae characterized by its original fruit named "baguenaudes" reddish brown pods swell mature and become translucent.

This venerable plant is loved and hated for the same reason - it grows fast and covers everything. Most people love the deep green glen it creates as it covers the ground, and also any tree trunk it reaches - with plenty of moisture, it'll climb to 50 ft.

A. melanocarpa can also be used as an edible fruit crop although the fruit is too astringent to eat raw. The fruit is used instead in baking and to make jams, jellies, syrup, tea, juice, and wine.
