Novelties of heirloom seeds for the first week of January 2018



The assortment of goods of our store has been replenished, - novelties of heirloom seeds. All the seeds before packaging are tested for germination and variety, so you can be sure that the plant that is mentioned in the description will grow.


Vegetable

This variety produces large size Winter Melons, up to 40 pounds. Large fruit has green skin with wax and pure white flesh inside for vegetable uses. This is one of the most popular Winter Melon varieties in southern China and subtropical Asia.
 
Classic Hungarian hot pepper with a rich flavor. Heat is high but not too extreme. Round, red cherry shaped fruit are about 1” wide and deep red when ripe. Relatively thick walls for a hot pepper make this variety great for hot sauce and stuffing.
Medium late bulb onion variety ready for harvest in 106-110 days. Bulbs are unique drop shaped, 150-170 g (5.64-5.82 oz), 12-15 cm (4.72-5.9in) long and 5 cm (1.96in) wide, covered with shinny light brown colour shell. Popular for great, luscious flavour.
 
Thick enough for a bit of crunch when eaten fresh, but thin enough to dry easily. The fruits are sweet with moderately warm heat for a cayenne. "Pepper heads" can eat Red Ember fruits whole, while others craving a touch of heat can slice it.
 
An attractive medium-hot pepper from the Ukraine. The plants grow to 24 inches tall and produce heavy crops of long thin peppers up to 8 inches in length which resemble tongues of fire. Excellent for use in salsas.
 
Beetroot Cylindra has long, red cylindrical roots making it the ideal variety for slicing. Cylindra has a great colour, is free from internal rings stores well and keeps its sweet flavour all season. Delicious served either as a hot vegetable.
 
Mid-early variety (90-110 days). Smooth, cylindrical shaped root, weight 200-300 g (7-11 oz.). Intense red, juicy and tender flesh without rings. Use fresh and for long term winter storage. Rival is a true gardeners favourite.
 
This is a standard mainstay of fall and winter harvest daikon radishes from Japan. The enormous roots can grow to 50-75 cm long and 6-8 cm (2.5-3.25″) in diameter. They keep very well as the soil cools down into early winter.
 
Crisp firm leaves grow in compact, medium-sized heads. Iceberg lettuce has red tinged, pale green outer leaves around the tasty heart. Ideal in mixed salads. Contains Vitamin A. Sow the seeds from early spring, 0.5 cm deep 30 cm apart.
 
This superb bush variety grows to only about a third of the size of other varieties, therefore only requiring a third of the space. It's great for containers and raised beds, producing a bountiful crop of delicious cucumbers. Mid-sized 9-12 cm cucumbers.
 
Perfect for heavier soils and containers! The small, conical roots of Carrot 'Royal Chantenay' have broad shoulders and strong foliage making them easier to pull when harvesting. This short carrot can be sown successionally for an ongoing harvest.
 
Medium early (120-130 days) sweet pepper Ananstasia was developed in the early 1990's in Ukraine. Suitable for cultivation in protected and open field. The average weight of the fruit 220-250g. Fruits are thick (up to 8 mm).
 
A simple name for a simply fabulous bell whose brilliant orange fruits are packed with melt-in-your-mouth sweetness. Compact plants exceed expectations, producing prolific yields of blocky, 3 to 5" fruits with thick walls and crisp flesh.
 

Herbs

The Herb of Grace. Traditionally holy water was sprinkled during Mass with a brush made of Rue. Aromatic shrub with attractive blue-green foliage and a pungent aroma. Good for short hedges or borders due to upright, bushy habit.
 
A very handsome plant in the garden with its graceful, feathery foliage and, later on, an extraordinary white bulb-like stem. Both foliage and stem are sweetly fragrant, with a delicate aniseed flavour.
 
The plant is composed of a countless number of tiny, brilliant green, piquant leaves, each less than 1cm (¼ in) in length. Greek basil is subtler, sweeter than its Italian counterpart. Aromatic, lightly fresh and pleasantly spicy.
 
Summer savory boasts a warming, peppery scent and taste. One of the essential ingredients in Herbs de Provence (along with rosemary, thyme, and oregano), summer savory is also wonderful alone to season beans, meats, and stuffings.
 
Lemon balm seeds are easy to germinate. It is a perennial herb that is very easy to grow from seeds and to establish in a garden. Lemon balm grows up to 70-150 cm tall. The leaves are very aromatic and have a nice lemon scent and flavour.
 
Dill is excellent in sauces, soups and salads. A chef's favourite with fish. Grows up to 1.2 metres tall. Sow this herb in pots, containers from mid Spring onwards. Cover these herb seeds with finely sieved compost. Dill can be sown direct outdoors.

Flowers

Feature large 10 to 15 cm (4 to 5in) purple blooms. Growing 50-80 cm (30in) tall, with thick straight stems that are less likely to bend when being cut, they make wonderful cut flowers and have a long vase life.
 
Castor oil plant can reach a height of 1-2 metres. Gives a tropical feel to any garden. The glossy leaves are 15–45 cm long, long-stalked, alternate and palmate with 5–12 deep lobes with coarsely- toothed segments.
 

Trees

Fruit - raw or cooked. Sub-acid, dry and mealy. Our experience has been that the fruit is sweet and somewhat juicy, it has a thick flesh with a nice flavour and makes an acceptable dessert fruit. The fruit can also be used in making pies, preserves etc.
 

Exclusive

Fenugreek is a spice native to Asia and the southern regions of Europe. It’s widely used in Asian cuisines and is a must have ingredient for an Indian curry. The spice is renowned for its rich flavor.
 
Goji Berry, also known as Chinese wolfberry, is a cold-hardy, perennial shrub that grows in many regions of the world, but which is specifically cultivated in China. It has been reportedly used in Chinese medicine for nearly 2000 years.
