Blue needle petal china aster (Callistephus chinensis) is a wonderful variety with intensely coloured, cornflower-blue, thin-as-needles petals that are bundled in round, double, beautiful inflorescences.
Anthodia of this tall (reaching 50-70 cm in height) aster develop on tops of branched, slender, tender looking stalks that are covered with small spiky leaves forming loose tufts. This plant is easy in cultivation and blooms the whole summer long and sometimes even in autumn until the first frosts.
Seeds of the needle petal china aster should be sown in early spring under covers or at home, preferably under glass shields. After hardening - accustoming to lower temperatures outdoor - the seedlings are transplanted into soil in May. Because of their loose structure asters look best in large groupings.
There are varieties with the same, needle inflorescences in different colours - from white, through yellow, pink, red to purple - available on the market. It is really worth to put some effort into setting up a multi-coloured aster composition. Presented variety will also make for a great backround for lower growing annual species - like marigold, calendula or impatiens.
