Organic Goldencreeper
Goldencreeper or Manchu Tuber-Gourd makes subterranean, very large, perennial, potato-like root tubers and annual, fast growing vines with hairy leaves and yellow flowers which are followed by egg-sized hairy fruits (not edible) turning to an ornamental bright scarlet with maturity.
This plant is dioecious, i.e. female and male flowers are born on different plants. It is a member of the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae) and home to open spots in woods from Northern China to Sout-Eastern Russia. Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot in the garden. Plants require a climbing aid (e.g. on a fence). Plant several plants together for a better fruit set.
Sow preferably from end of January to mid March in any rich soil under glass in groups of two to three seeds per pot. Keep pots in a sunny and quite warm spot inside (e.g. on a heated window sill, in a heated greenhouse or warm wintergarden) at a minimum of some 20°C. Transplant young plants to the open garden in fertile, well drained soil after the last freezing nights in late spring.
