Organic Jostaberry «Josta»
Josta berry (Ribes 'Josta') has two berry flavours in one: the refreshing taste of blackcurrants with the mildly acidic flavour of gooseberries. These berries are very healthy and have a very high vitamin C content.
The bushes are extremely prolific. A harvest of 5-7 kg per bush is not uncommon. Ready for picking in July. Ribes ‘Josta’ is the result of crossing the blackcurrant and the gooseberry. It’s a very strong and healthy bush that can become 2 m high. The branches don’t have thorns.
The small flowers of the Ribes ‘Josta’ appear in April, they are pollinated by insects. Afterwards they develop full branches of shiny black berries. The taste of the josta berries is reminiscent of fresh blackcurrants and soft sour gooseber ries. From one bush you can harvest up to 5-7 kilos of berries! The fruits are very rich in vitamin C. Also very beautiful to plant as a hedge.
How to Grow
Make sure that the roots of Ribes ‘Josta’ are moistened well before planting by soaking them in a bucket with lukewarm water. Prepare a large planting hole of 50 x 50 x 50 cm and loosen the soil. Put the root ball of the Jostaberry at the right depth in the planting hole. The top of the root ball should be just below the ground level. Don’t plant too deep! Fill the planting hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. The Jostaberry grows well in all types of garden soil. Give the bush a spot in the full sun or light shade. The planting distance between the bushes is approximately 1.5 - 2 metres.
Ribes ‘Josta’ is a very easy fruit bush to grow. Water the Jostaberry more often during dry periods. In the spring use a garden fertilizer rich in potassium. Thin the bush lightly every three years in March and slightly prune any branches that are too long. Cut low hanging branches completely back. Don’t cut back too much as this could be at the expense of the fruit production. It’s also possible to train the branches horizontally along stretched wires. It is necessary to protect the small fruits from birds. The berries ripen in July. Pick them only when they are completely ripe.
