Chrysanthemum-flowered aster "Comet" (Callistephus chinensis) is a very attractive annual plant. Asters in general belong to the most beautiful summer flowers that delight us with an exceptional colour palette and abundant blooming.
They bloom for a very long time, all summer long until autumn. "Comet" aster grows 50 - 80 cm tall. It produces stiff, broadly branched stems that end with large inflorescences. Flowers that resemble chrysanthemum blooms enchant with a broad colour palette, including white, pink, purple, blue and yellow. These tall asters will look beautiful at multispecies borders, but work perfectly as cut flowers, too.
Sow aster seeds early in spring to boxes or seeding trays placed indoors, preferably 6 - 8 weeks before planned transplantation to the permanent site. Seedlings need to be transplanted outside no earlier than in May, after the risk of spring frosts has passed. You may also sow seeds in April on a seed bed. Asters grow best on sunny or partially shady sites, where they would bloom most abundantly. They prefer moist, permeable soils rich in nutrients.
