Walnut "Ideal"
Low-growing variety, does not grow above 4-5 m. The bark is gray, on 2-3-year-old shoots it is brown, on annual shoots it is bluish-green, with slight pubescence. Leaves are pinnate. On vegetative shoots they are arranged spirally, on fruitful shoots they are underdeveloped in the lower part of the shoot, in the form of scales.
The first fruits show already in the 2nd year of life. Good yields can be obtained from the 5th year. Small white flowers with a greenish tinge, collected in a brush of 9-15 pcs. Wind pollinated, dioecious.
Large (on average 10 grams), oval in shape, with a thin shell. The core is light, it is taken out easily. Ripen from September to October.
Advantages:- Manages to form 2 crops per year.
- High, up to 120 kg from each tree.
- High, up to -35ºС.
- Chlorosis resistant.
- Able to grow on acidic or saline soils. Does not tolerate close occurrence of subsoil waters.
Unfortunately, the Ideal variety does not differ in durability compared to traditional forms. If an ordinary walnut is able to live for more than 100 years, then an early-growing one is only about 40-50.
Reproduction features
Walnut Ideal is propagated by seeds or grafting. The process of growing it from seeds is fascinating and has a curious feature: the nuts should be placed close to each other in 4 pieces in the hole. Then the seedlings grow together and form a powerful and stable plant.
Walnut fruits are sown either before winter or in spring after the snow melts. In the second case, it is necessary to carry out the stratification of nuts in wet sand for 1.5 months at a temperature of + 7ºС and plant the already germinated material. The fruits are planted in holes 10 cm deep.
In the first year, the development of seedlings is rather slow. By autumn, they grow to only 15-20 cm. But next spring, the nut shows a "growth spurt". When the height of the seedling exceeds a meter, you can wait for the first flowers.
