Bur Oak / Quercus Macrocarpa
Native to the eastern and central regions of North America. Bur oak is a long-lived, large deciduous tree with a massive trunk and furrowed bark. It is an attractive and resilient ornamental tree which grows well in cities.
It’s usually tall with a straight trunk. The leaves are lustrous green on top, and pale and hairy underneath, with the characteristic lobed shape. The large size of the Bur oak makes it a great choice in larger properties and parks. It grows best in deep loam soil and full sun or partial to moderate shade. The acorns are large (thus the Latin species name macrocarpa - large fruit). Its acorns mature in late summer to autumn and are a favourite food for wildlife.
Size: Height 70 to 80 ft; Width 40 to 60 ft.
