A tree grows up to 20 m high, a trunk diameter of up to 1 m (rarely 1.4 m), differs from most other oaks in leaves that form like bay leaves 8-20 cm long and 1.5-7.5 cm wide, slightly pubescent below. The fruits are solitary acorns, 9-18 mm long, mature about 18 months after pollination, and are an important food for squirrels and birds.
