Blue peony aster (Callistephus chinensis) with summer-sky coloured blooms outshines the majestic peonies, whom it owes its name. This original variety with untypically coloured blooms can become an exquisite decoration on every sunny corner in your garden or allotment.
This plant forms quite large, compact tufts growing 50 to 80 cm tall. Double, large flowers consisting of tongue-shaped petals that overlap like those of peonies, open on tops of the erect stems. Blooming season of this variety comes to an end in October.
Seeds of the blue peony aster can be sown in spring into unheated hotbeds, under covers or in pots and boxes placed at home on a windowsill. Strong seedlings with at least a few pairs of true leaves are transferred to borders after the last frosts. These plants need sunny, warm sites with fertile, medium compact soils. Their highly ornamental flower heads harmonise with contrastingly coloured zinnia, marigold and rudbeckia blooms. They are also worth placing in vases.
