Yellow pompom-flowered aster (Callistephus chinensis) is a popular annual plant producing unique blooms that resemble - easy guess - pompoms.
This species reaches circa 50 cm in height and takes on a nice bushy habit. It develops large sunny-yellow flowers 4-5 cm wide in diameter. It blooms from summer until the first frosts in autumn and its flowers attract butterflies and bees to the garden.
Yellow pompom-flowered aster will adorn every border, especially when planted together in multicolour compositions with other aster varieties. This aster variety belongs to the most beautiful summer flowers. It is fitted for cut flower, as it retains freshness in vases for a long time.
Aster seeds are sown early in spring indoors, or directly in the garden after the last frosts. You should use light, weel drained soil for that purpose. Please do remember to maintain steady humidity and temperature in range of 16 - 20°C. Seedlings are transplanted in 30 x 30 cm spacings. This species tolerates partial shade and drought, although it grows best in a fertile, moist, yet permeable soil.
