Agrotechnics. The best predecessors of beets are cucumbers, early potatoes, cabbage under which organic fertilizers were applied. On fertile soils, only mineral fertilizers are applied. In the spring, when digging the site, 15-20 g of ammonium nitrate or 20-30 g of ammonium sulfate, 30-40 g of superphosphate and 10-15 g of potassium chloride per 1 m2 are added.

Organic fertilizers are also added to beetroot soils: fresh manure in the fall and humus or compost in the spring (4-5 kg of manure or 2-3 kg of humus or 3-4 kg of compost per 1 m2). To neutralize excess acidity, 0.5-1 kg of lime-fluff per 1 m2 is added.

In the garden, beets are rarely grown as a separate crop - in most cases it is planted as a compactor with cucumber, potatoes, along the borders of ridges and irrigation ditches.

Sowing beets is carried out in the fall before winter and spring. In the spring, they begin sowing when the soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm rises to +8 ... + 10 ° C (early May). Before winter, they sow in late October - early November and in this case receive the earliest production (in late June).

In the spring they sow on a flat surface, in the autumn on ridges, into grooves made at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other. The sowing rate of seeds during spring sowing is 1.5-2 g, with winter - 2-3 g per 1 m2. Seeding depth is 2-3 cm for spring sowing and 3-4 cm for winter. Winter crops are mulched with peat or humus. To accelerate the emergence of seedlings during spring sowing, soaking and germination of seeds are used (as in carrots). Beets can be planted with seedlings previously grown in a bright, warm room. Seedlings with 3-4 real leaves are planted in open ground in the first decade of May.
