Large upright shrub or small tree up to 4 m high and 3 m wide, sometimes with several shoots. With age, it grows faster in width than in height, slow-growing. Annual growth is about 15 cm.

Crown shape: round or umbrella-shaped. The leaves are 5-9-palmate-lobed, initially bright red, later dark red. The flowers are purple in few-flowered, drooping corymbose panicles. Fruits are bare, about 1-2 cm long. Poorly tolerates drought and excessive soil moisture.

Requires sunny or semi-shady, warm, sheltered places, as well as fertile and sufficiently moist soil. It is recommended to cover young specimens for the winter. Blooms in May. An excellent shrub for small gardens and containers.

Propagation: By grafting or by cuttings, but can also be propagated from seed and seedlings tend to grow faster and more confidently

Recommendedin single and group plantings on the lawn and other decorative compositions. Especially appreciated for its unusually beautiful leaf pattern and incredibly intense coloration during the fall.

    Growing from seeds:
Palm-leaf maple seeds require pre-sowing preparation - stratification. And a nice bonus is that, unlike most maples, the stratification period is quite short - 2-4 weeks.
Therefore, clean and dried palm-leaf maple seeds can be stored in a bag in the refrigerator until February, stratified for 3-4 weeks and sown by March.

Stratification: soak the seeds in water at room temperature for 2 days, change the water 1-2 times a day. Then drain the water, mix the seeds with sand or perlite / vermiculite, pour into a bag, moisten, but do not flood and put in the refrigerator. Temperature is about +5
Once a week or two, take out the seeds and, if necessary, rinse and moisten.

Seedlings appear 2-3 weeks after sowing. Since the tree is small, you should not expect rapid growth from the seedlings. In the first year they grow up to 5-12 cm. But already in the first year of life, in the fall they will have beautiful bright leaves.
