Reed Canary Grass or Phalaris (Phalaris arundinacea)
A monocot species from the genus Phalaris in the grass family (Poaceae). This is a herbaceous perennial plant. Leaf height ranges from 90 to 120 cm. The leaf blades are green with white or creamy stripes. Leaves are simple, lanceolate or linear in shape, with a pointed tip and a wedge-shaped or truncated base; the lower surface of the leaf is rough to the touch. The inflorescence is a spike or panicle. Flowers are small and may be brown, green, or lilac in color. The plant is light-loving but also shade-tolerant.
Phalaris arundinacea is valued as an ornamental plant, enhancing landscapes with its fast-growing, lush foliage and decorative cultivars. It is also important in agriculture as a forage crop, providing high-quality silage and hay, and is recognized as an energy crop for biofuel production. Additionally, it is used for erosion control, slope and ravine stabilization, and as a raw material in the chemical and construction industries.
The most popular cultivar is ‘Picta’, known for its striking appearance.
Stems of this cultivar can reach up to 1.5 meters in height. The plant features attractive linear green leaves up to 2 cm wide, adorned with longitudinal light stripes. ‘Picta’ prefers well-lit areas with moist soil.
It is often planted near freshwater bodies and can successfully grow even in shallow water up to 15–20 cm deep.
In mixed plantings, Phalaris pairs well with phlox, irises, and other ornamental grasses. It can also be used as a ground cover plant.
