Kiwano (African horned cucumber, horned melon) «Rund» or «Jelly Round»

Kiwano in general originates from arid regions of southern Africa. The “Jelly Round” variety is a distinct selection, and due to factors such as specific cultivation requirements and limited commercial availability, it is considered rare. It is characterized by an almost spherical shape, differing from the more elongated form of standard kiwano. Mature fruits usually reach a diameter of about 7.5 to 10 cm. The outer rind changes color as the fruit ripens, shifting from pale peach or ivory to a bright orange hue. The exocarp is covered with pronounced spiny protrusions, creating a distinctive textured surface. The inner flesh is a gelatinous emerald-green substance filled with numerous edible white-cream seeds. The consistency of this pulp explains the description “jelly.”
