This plant produces one of the finest and most delicious of winter salad crops. Excellent for forcing and easy to grow, the seed is sown in spring in a shallow drill and the plants thinned out to 9ins apart.
The carrot-like roots are harvested in November and stored in a cool place. 3 or 4 weeks before required, bring them into a dark, warm place when the delicious, succulent shoots, "Chicons", will be formed.
How to Grow
Requires a prepared soil with plenty of compost. Rake a general fertilizer in a few days before sowing. Sow directly May-Jul. Sow seed thinly 15mm deep in rows 25cm apart. Germination takes 7-21 days approx. Thin seedlings to 20cm spacing. Water until established. In summer trim of top growth leaving 2cm above ground. Then cover plant with a device or container which will completely block out the light, the chicons should form. Alternatively dig up the root after trimming and store in dry sand or dry soil and place in the dark. Repot when desired, again ensuring light is excluded for forcing.
