Representing a wide range of sizes and colors (including many bicolors), these plants are a carefree choice for the shade garden, offering crisp, fresh bold color right up till frost! They are neither the hardest nor the easiest seed to start, germinating reliably in about 3 weeks.
How to Grow
Sow seeds in cell packs or 2 in. pots, press into soil, barely cover. Kept at 60°F., germination usually occurs within 4-5 weeks. If not, put container inside a zip-lock bag and refrigerate for 4 weeks. Return to 60°F. until germination occurs. See starting seeds for information about raising seedlings under lights.
Part to full shade. Rich soil, regular feeding and water. Tolerates wet soils. Winter dormant, cut plants down to the ground in fall. Plants remain vigorous without division, becoming more beautiful as they age. Can further propagate by lifting plantlets at the edge of a clump. Protect leaves from slugs and snails. Flowers attract bees and hummingbirds.
