Filbert or Lombardy nut / Corylus maxima
It is also called Hazelnut. It is a multi-stemmed shrub and grows up to 4 meters. The Lombard nut has been considered a magical plant since ancient times - it was used as a talisman to protect against evil forces, as well as from mice and even from lightning strikes.
These plants were certainly used in fortune telling, and their most important property was that in lean years they saved people from starvation and helped travelers who had lost their way.
If we compare the Lombardy nut and the hazelnut, they are almost the same in appearance, with the exception of the size, which is 3-4 times larger in the Lombardy nut than in the hazelnut, a more pleasant taste, higher fat content (about 70% of the total mass), protein and other nutrients.
Hazelnuts are characterized by good taste and significant benefits for the body. In addition to oil, they also contain a huge amount of microelements:
- valuable oils (about 70%);
- vitamins C, E, B vitamins;
- calcium, sodium, zinc, magnesium, iron (more than in many fruits and meats);
- proteins – 12.6 g, fats – 62.4 g, carbohydrates – 13.7 g;
- energy value: 679 kcal per 100 grams.
They are used raw and fried for food, and ground nuts are added to confectionery products. The remaining products after squeezing the nut oil are added to the halva. Large areas are devoted to this crop in Ukraine and neighboring European countries.
It is not very demanding in terms of care, is almost not susceptible to diseases and pests, and produces a large harvest of nuts, which can be stored at room temperature for about a year, and at temperatures from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius - up to 4 years.
