Although very familiar to many, the chick pea is a crop rarely seen in the UK, though it has been cultivated for centuries in Asia and the Mediterranean. Our seed comes from Italy, and is of the white-skinned variety which has a superior flavour.
The plant is very attractive with ferny silver leaves and is very easy to grow. The pods, which are produced in profusion, can be eaten young in much the same way as a petis pois or small French beans, and with sunshine these can be left to develop into the larger, characteristic chick pea. A mature but still green chick pea also makes a great alternative to the very popular edamame bean - simply boiled (podded or unpodded) for just a minute or so, it makes a great addition to all sorts of salads and, of course, perfect for a delicious green houmous. Grow in a well-drained soil with plenty of sunshine.

This fine large onion has gained a big following in the past several years. Bulbs in excess of 15 oz are possible, but the real virtue of this variety is the quality. Color is a snow-white, centers are bull’s eye single, tops are vigorous.
