Heirloom. The classic oblong watermelon, Charleston Gray has red, fiberless flesh and a tough, medium-thick gray-green rind often used for making watermelon rind pickles. At one time this was the predominant watermelon in home gardens and markets.

A perennial creeping plant, with beautiful and very fragrant oval leaves and small white flowers, collected in a small cone-shaped cob, contains the sweetener hernandulcin, which is 1000 times sweeter than sugar.

A herbaceous plant (used as an annual) with fleshy stems, erect or lodging, up to 30 cm high. It grows quickly, forming a dense carpet of juicy bluish-green leaves and silky double flowers.

Salsola komarovii, is considered one of Japan’s oldest vegetables. A gourmet speciality, popularly known as Okahijiki, it gets its name from the fact that it looks like seaweed (hijiki), but grows on land (oka).
