Royal Sweet Pea vines are an old-fashioned favorite, and they are prized for being so easily grown from Sweet Peas seeds and their charming, scented blooms. This lavender Sweet Pea has an average of 3 - 5 blooms in a cluster and each bloom is approximately 1 inch in size.

The color of the blooms may range from light lavender to dark, nearly purple, but all the blooms are gorgeous! This variety also makes a wonderful cut flower because the stems are so long and full of blooms.

How To Grow Sweet Pea Flowers From Seed

For best germination, Sweet Pea flower seeds need to be scarified before sowing. Nicking the seed with a nail clipper breaks the outer coat of the Sweet Peas seeds so it can absorb water immediately. By doing this a larger percentage of the seeds will germinate and they will sprout a few days earlier. After nicking the seed, soak the Sweet Pea flower seeds over night in tepid water.

Sow scented Sweet Pea seeds directly outdoors. Prepare a seed bed by loosening the top 1 - 2 inches of soil and weeding. Sow Sweet Pea flower seeds 2 - 3 inches apart, and thin plants later to 5 - 6 inches apart. When the Sweet Pea seedlings have 3 - 4 pairs of leaves, pinch the top of the seedling, leaving 2 - 3 pairs of leaves. This encourages a more branching habit making the annual Sweet Pea vine fuller. Have a trellis or wire for them to attach to as they will begin to climb very quickly after germination.

Grow Sweet Pea plants in full sun, but in areas of very hot summer weather, provide some afternoon shade for the best performance. Position them away from winds and rotate locations from year to year to prevent Sweet Pea pests. In cold climates plant the seed in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. In warm climates, plant in October through January for spring bloom.
