Pennisetum (Pearl millet) African «White miracle» / Pennisetum glaucum
Is an annual herbaceous plant of the grass family, 3 to 4 meters high. The root penetrates the soil to a depth of 3.6 meters, with 80% of the root mass located at a depth of up to 10 centimeters. The leaves are dark green. The inflorescences are dense, cylindrical or ellipsoidal with a diameter of 10-20 millimeters. The infructescence contains from 1000 to 3000 grains with a diameter of up to 5 mm. Pollen is carried by the wind.
The grain contains proteins (8-20%), fats (5%) and carbohydrates (67%). The protein content strongly depends on the age of the grain; the younger the grain, the more protein it contains.
Due to its composition, fresh pearl millet is very tasty. It is used to make flat cakes, porridge, a drink reminiscent of beer, and to feed poultry and livestock; stems and leaves - for green fodder and hay. Pearl millet produces very high yields (up to 15 ears can be formed on 1 multi-stemmed plant).
