It is an annual herb of the cereal family, 3 to 4 meters high. The root penetrates the soil to a depth of 3.6 meters, while 80% of the root mass is located at a depth of 10 centimeters. Leaves are dark green. Inflorescences are dense, cylindrical or ellipsoidal with a diameter of 10-20 millimeters. The seed contains from 1000 to 3000 grains up to 5 mm in diameter. Pollen is carried by the wind.
"Purple Baron" is slightly darker than "Purple Wonder".
The plant is native to tropical Africa, where it was cultivated 3000 years ago. As a cultivated plant, it got through the Arabian Peninsula to India and Burma, where it is widely cultivated in the arid tropics at an altitude of 800 to 1800 m above sea level.
Cultivated in the arid regions of Africa, Asia, partly in southern Europe and America. Grain contains proteins (8-20%), fats (5%) and carbohydrates (67%). The protein content strongly depends on the age of the grain, the younger the grain, the more protein it contains.
Thanks to its composition, fresh African millet is delicious. It is used for the manufacture of flat cakes, porridge, a drink resembling beer, for feeding poultry and livestock; stems and leaves - for green fodder and hay. African millet gives very high yields (up to 15 ears can be formed on 1 multi-stem plant).
