Princess aster "Malinka" (Callistephus chinensis) is a variety producing extremely decorative flowers. Inflorescences of this variety stand out with their form: their broad centres are filled with disc flowers that are surrounded by two or three verticils of ray flowers.
The large, crimson blooms develop atop 60 - 70 cm tall stems. The "Malinka" variety will adorn borders with its blooms from the beginning of summer until late autumn. It looks terrific in larger groupings or in mixed arrangements with snapdragons, marigolds and zinnias. It also works well as cut flower, as it retains freshness for a long time.
Seeds of the princess asters should be sown in early spring under covers. Direct sow to the ground would be possible in May - these plants would bloom a couple of weeks later. Young plants are extremely sensitive to low temperatures, therefore are transferred outside only in the second half of May. Choose sunny or partially shady spots for aster cultivation. Provide them with a soil rich in nutrients and water.
