Cotoneaster divaricatus, the spreading cotoneaster
Is a plant that grows in the form of a deciduous shrub. The bushes have a spreading crown of medium density. The height of an adult plant can reach 2 meters, while the crown width is 3 meters. The growth rate of the culture is moderate: per year it increases by about 30 centimeters in height and 20 centimeters in width. It reaches its full size in 10 to 20 years.
The plant is considered a long-liver — it can actively grow and develop in one place for up to 60 years. Cotoneaster divaricatus blooms with pink flat and rounded flowers about 0.9 centimeters in size. The flowering period lasts from the second week until the end of June, staying on the plant for 15–20 days. The leaves are dark green, turning orange in autumn. The shape of the leaves is elliptical, with a light green underside. Leaf size ranges from 1 to 2.5 centimeters. The leaves and fruits give the plant special decorative value. The homeland of this species of cotoneaster is considered to be Central and Western China.
Requirements for growing Cotoneaster divaricatus:- The plant grows and develops better in sunny areas, but can also grow well in partial shade.
- It has low requirements for moisture and can grow in soils with different levels of humidity.
- Among soils, cotoneaster can be grown in any except dry ones.
- The plant has excellent frost resistance and winters well in the climatic conditions of Ukraine.
- Cotoneaster divaricatus requires minimal care and is therefore widely used in modern landscaping of cities and suburban areas.
Use of the plant in landscape design:
Cotoneaster divaricatus is an ideal plant for creating hedges. It is also used in such landscape design solutions as:- rockeries;
- alpine gardens;
- rock gardens;
- container plantings (decorating balconies, terraces, and patios);
- planting in groups with deciduous and coniferous crops;
- solitary plantings.
The flowering of cotoneaster is inconspicuous, but its decorative value does not suffer from this. The plant acquires special beauty with the appearance of bright red fruits, which can remain on the bushes until deep winter. The leaves of proper shape and rich color also add decorative value. Cotoneaster is especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn various shades of orange and red.
How to plant cotoneaster:- For planting, it is better to buy seedlings with a closed root system — such plants quickly take root after planting and are not deformed during transportation.
- The optimal time for planting is spring (before bud break, when the soil has sufficiently thawed).
- Some gardeners advise planting in autumn, but autumn planting is characterized by a lower survival rate.
- The planting pit for the culture should be prepared with dimensions of 50 × 50 × 50 centimeters.
- A 20-centimeter layer of drainage should be poured at the bottom of the pit — for this, use broken brick, expanded clay, or crushed stone mixed with sand.
- The substrate for filling the roots is prepared from sod soil, sand, and peat (ratio 2:1:1).
- 250 grams of lime should also be added to the soil mixture for planting.
- The root collar should be left at ground level.
- The soil under the planted seedling should be compacted.
- After planting, the plant should be watered, and the trunk circle mulched (using wood shavings, crushed bark, or peat).
Care for Cotoneaster divaricatus:
When caring for the plant, it is important to remember that it does not tolerate overwatering. Therefore, the culture should be watered only in hot weather — for this, pour 7–8 buckets of water under each plant once every two weeks. After watering, weeds should be carefully removed and the soil loosened to a depth of 10–15 centimeters. In general, the plant needs watering less than crown washing with water. Pruning cotoneaster involves the mandatory removal of dry, unhealthy, and frozen branches. Plants forming a hedge should be trimmed at least twice per season.
