  • Common reed or southern reed / Phragmites australis

This is a tall, strong, perennial grass that usually grows in marshy areas and in the coastal zone of water bodies, also found far from water bodies. Belongs to the family Poaceae. It has stiff broad leaves and a large loose inflorescence, forms colonies, spreads with the help of strong rhizomes.

The inflorescence in flowers is purple, in fruits gray. Thanks to its purifying properties, it is the main species for planting hydrobotanical treatment plants. It has great importance for reclamation of swamps, strengthening of banks (also where water waves occur) and water purification.

It forms a dense ground rosette of narrow leaves, from which rise tall, straight flowering stems, spreading in all directions like a fountain. It reaches a height of 4 meters depending on growing conditions and care.

Leaves are smooth, linear, gray-green in color, up to 80 cm long and 4 cm wide. Stems are straight, knotty, hollow, after flowering become woody. Flowers are fluffy panicles, from light brown, yellowish to violet in color, consisting of a large number of small spikelets, blooming in July–September; length is 20–40 cm. Strong oval rhizomes can reach a depth of up to 2 m and spread in width up to 3 m. Fruits and seeds are small, brown, with many white hairs. Blooms from July to September depending on climatic conditions.

Per season about 60 cm depending on growing conditions, soil quality and sufficient moisture.

Feels excellent in sun and partial shade. Prefers moist soil, but at the same time can withstand short periods of drought thanks to its deep root system. Adapts to a wide range of soil types, but grows better on moist, well-drained soil with neutral or slightly acidic reaction.

Widely used in landscape design thanks to its expressive vertical form and delicate floral panicles. It is often planted as a solitaire in garden compositions, where it can create spectacular accents. This grass is effective for creating textural contrasts in mixed borders, combining with other perennials and ornamental grasses. It can be used for decorating the banks of water bodies or as part of natural landscapes, where it helps preserve biodiversity.

In addition, thanks to its resistance to diseases and pests, reed is an excellent choice for gardeners who are looking for undemanding and hardy plants for their gardens.

Climate zone / frost resistance zone: 4.
