Spiny gourd or spine gourd / Momordica dioica
Is a herbaceous climbing plant with annual shoots and a perennial tuberous rhizome. Stems are long, slender, twining, with very thin tendrils that may be simple or forked. Leaves are small, alternate, heart-shaped or broadly ovate, entire or slightly 3–5-lobed, rough, with sparse teeth, dark green, borne on long petioles.
The plant is dioecious: male and female flowers develop on separate individuals. Flowers are yellow or cream-colored, solitary on female plants, and solitary or in groups of 2–3 on male plants. Female flowers have a clearly visible inferior ovary. Fruits are round or oval, dark green, 4–8 cm long, densely covered with soft spines. When ripe they turn orange-red. Seeds are ovate, flattened, up to 12 mm long, light brown, decorated with intricate grooved patterns. Each seed is surrounded by a bright, edible, juicy, sweet, mucilaginous aril.
Fruits are rich in calcium, phosphorus, and carotene. Young green spiny fruits are highly valued in India, often eaten as a vegetable boiled or fried. They are pleasant in taste, fairly sweet, and completely non-bitter. Tender shoots and leaves are used as greens. The tuberous root is also prepared as a vegetable.
Fruits, leaves, and tuberous roots are used in Indian folk medicine, particularly for treating diabetes. The fruits are nutritionally rich, containing significant amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, fiber, minerals (calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, sodium), and vitamins (carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin). The plant exhibits notable antioxidant activity, which may contribute to its potential in preventing and treating diseases associated with oxidative stress, such as cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and cancer.
Momordica dioica, commonly known as teasle gourd and also known as bristly balsam pear.
