A low tree, grows up to 12 m, has a widely rounded crown and dark brown bark. The plant is thickly covered with a sticky mass, hence the name.

A tree up to 12 m high, with a wide crown and a trunk with a diameter of up to 35 cm. The covered bark is thick, dark brown, smooth. Shoots, leaf shafts, inflorescence axis, pedicels and calyxes are sticky with glandular pubescence.
Leaves up to 20 cm long, with 13-25 (up to 27) leaflets; leaflets oblong-elliptical, 2.5-4 cm long, up to 2 cm wide, more or less obtuse at the apex and with a short spine, rounded or broadly wedge-shaped at the base, pubescent at an early age, later glabrous above, bright green below greyish, glabrous or pubescent. The stipules are transformed into awl-shaped spines 4-5 mm long or falling off.
The flowers are pink, about 2 cm long, collected 6-15 in almost erect racemes 5-10 cm long and 4-5 cm wide. The calyx is up to 7 mm long, 5 mm wide, dark red, with narrow triangular teeth. It blooms in May - June, sometimes again in August. Fruits in August.
The beans are oblong-linear, 5.5-9 cm long, up to 12 mm wide, at the end with a bent nose, sparsely glandular-bristly. The seeds are oblong-reniform, about 4 mm long, 2 mm wide, smooth, brown, matte.
