A deciduous shrub reaching 3–4 meters in height, with widely spreading dark-red, sometimes green branches.
Leaves are broadly elliptical or round-ovate, 5–10 cm long and 3–7 cm wide, with a pointed tip and a rounded or broadly wedge-shaped base. Both sides of the leaf are covered with hairs, especially the lighter underside.
lowers are small, bright white, clustered in dense, fluffy corymbs about 4–5 cm in diameter. Fruits are 0.6 cm in diameter, purplish-black, and inedible. It blooms in May–June, and fruits ripen in September.
Cold-hardy. Shade-tolerant. Undemanding to soil — grows satisfactorily on relatively poor and dry soils; drought-resistant and highly adaptable to urban conditions.
Uses. In autumn, it is highly decorative due to its blood-red foliage, and in leafless condition — especially in winter — thanks to its red shoots. Suitable for group plantings, forest edges, and understory.
