A herbaceous tuberous perennial that does not overwinter in open ground. The stems are fragile, erect, 20-30 cm high. On one peduncle are male (double) and female (simple) flowers.

The seeds should be sown in late December - early January. They should be scattered in a thin layer on a sifted soil mixture of leaf soil, peat and sand (2:1:1) and sprayed with a 0.1% solution of potassium permanganate. The crops are kept under glass or at a temperature of 20-22 °C and before the first picking (as the substrate dries out), they are moistened with slightly warm water. Under these conditions, the seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks.

When the shoots appear, the glass should be raised, and after a month they should be picked (6x6 cm) and at the end of April - beginning of May (10x10 cm). During the period of growth and flowering of plants, the soil under them should be regularly watered. Since the root system of tuberous begonia is superficial, the soil around the plants should be loosened carefully, loosening can be replaced by mulching with peat. Tuberous begonia is widely used in various types of flower arrangements. It blooms profusely all summer, can be used for balconies, loggias, terraces.

It can be planted in flower beds, on flower beds, in flower vases, in groups on the lawn. Tuberous begonia is grown in places open to sunlight, but protected from the northern winds by plantings. Fertile, light, breathable and moisture-intensive, slightly acidic soil is suitable for the plant. It is planted in open ground when the last spring frosts have passed. Depending on the size of the plants, it is recommended to plant them at a distance of 10-20 cm from each other, and giant forms - at 25-30 cm.

Plants should be planted in holes, but not deep (1.5-2 cm from the ground level). After planting, the soil should be well watered and mulched. In the fall, watering should be reduced so that the plants stop growing. The tubers are dug up after real frosts, when the green mass and flowers of the plants freeze. First, you need to cut the stems to 2-3 cm. Dig up the tubers without clearing the soil, put them in one layer in boxes and keep them in a heated room so that they dry out a little. Then cover them with dry peat and store in the basement at a temperature of 10-12 ° C and humidity of 60-80%.

When growing tuberous begonia in pots, you should not dig it out of the pots for the winter; you need to cut off the above-ground mass and store it, just like tubers dug out of open ground.
