The leaves of the plant have a calming and analgesic effect. The crop also has fruits that are almost never used fresh. They are used to make wine or soft drinks.
The fruit is a round-ovoid black monodrupe about 8 mm long with juicy pulp and a smooth stone, bears fruit in July - August. The fruit is edible, the seeds are poisonous.
Widely used in hedges and also in mass planting on slopes to strengthen the soil. Needs warm and sheltered, sunny or semi-shaded places and fertile soil. It needs to be protected for the winter.
