Carambola, star fruit and five-corner / Averrhoa carambola
This is one of the distinctive tropical plants with uniquely shaped fruits. It is a medium-sized tree with a rather dense green or dark green crown and beautiful decorative leaves, quite similar to acacia leaves.
Carambola is one of the distinctive tropical plants with fruits of a unique shape, which in cross section look like five-pointed dark yellow stars, which is why they are often called Starfruits (from the English Starfruit - star fruit).
This evergreen tree today grows quite widely in South as well as Southeast Asia.
Carambola is a medium-sized tree with a fairly dense green or dark green crown and beautiful decorative leaves, quite similar to acacia leaves. The leaves of an adult tree can reach 50 cm in length, and the width of the carambola leaf is average, oval in shape with a pointed nose. The leaf petioles are short and the lionfish is absent. When you touch a leaf, its plates fold, which is generally characteristic of the entire oxalis family. An adult tree can be up to 5 m in height. This tropical plant is unique in that, unlike many others, it does not require much light. At the same time, caramola blooms quite profusely, and the small, five-petaled white-purple flowers are collected in inflorescences.
Carambola fruits have a very unusual ribbed shape and in cross section resemble a star. The color of the fruit skin when fully ripe ranges from yellow-green to yellowish-brown. The consistency of carambola fruits is juicy and at the same time crispy. The taste ranges from sour-sweet to distinctly sweet shades. It is also worth noting that these star fruits are rich in vitamin A and C and are very healthy. Starfruits ripen from May to August, and are most often used to decorate various types of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails or desserts.
Carambola is moderately resistant to cold and can withstand short-term frosts down to -6 °C.
Carambola is very unpretentious to grow at home. The plant will need medium-intensity watering, and it does not require a lot of light; it feels quite good in the shade. Carambola grows into a beautiful ornamental tree with a beautiful weeping crown.
