  • Rhododendron (azalea) «Klondyke»

This is a bright deciduous variety from the famous Knaphill-Exbury group, which immediately attracts attention with its rich golden-orange flowers with a copper sheen and decorative foliage. Bred in Germany in 1981, it became a true sunny accent of the spring garden, combining an impressive appearance, high winter hardiness, and ease of care.

The shrub reaches a height of 120–150 cm and a width of up to 180 cm, forming a rounded, symmetrical, and dense crown. The leaves are large and elongated: in spring they unfold bronze-red, in summer they turn deep green, and in autumn they change to yellow and copper-orange tones, adding extra ornamental value.

Flowering begins at the end of May and continues until early June. For three weeks the shrub is covered with large flowers 6–8 cm in diameter, gathered in lush inflorescences of 8–15 pieces. Their fiery yellow color with orange and copper shades is especially striking against the dark foliage. The flowers are delicately fragrant, which adds even more charm to the plant.

For successful cultivation, the azalea "Klondyke" should be planted in sunny or semi-shaded locations with morning sun and protection from midday heat. The soil must be loose, fertile, well-drained, and acidic (pH 4.0–5.5). Regular watering is required, especially during dry periods, while avoiding waterlogging. The variety has high winter hardiness — down to –28°C, which allows it to overwinter well in most regions of Ukraine and the temperate zone.

This rhododendron is ideal for landscape compositions in Japanese style, mixed borders, shady alleys, rock gardens, and the banks of ornamental ponds. It can serve as a bright solitary specimen or harmoniously complement a group of plants, creating a unique spring accent in the garden.
