Rhododendron (azalea) Albrechtii / Rhododendron albrechtii
Deciduous shrub 1–1.5 m tall, in nature up to 3 m, crown diameter up to 1 m. The crown is spreading and loose. Flowering begins at the end of April and continues in May. Flowers are purplish-red, up to 5 cm in diameter, grouped in clusters of 4–5. Annual growth is 5–7 cm, the plant grows slowly. Lifespan is more than 30 years. Light-loving.
Winter hardiness of flower buds is –23 to –25°C (without snow). This species requires preventive covering and winters well under snow.
Seeds do not require stratification. The optimal soil acidity for rhododendrons is pH 4.0–5.5, though soils up to pH 5.8 can also be used. Factors influencing successful seed propagation under introduction conditions include sowing substrate, humidity, temperature, light, and seedling care.
The sowing substrate may vary, but it must be loose, acidic, and well aerated. The fine roots of rhododendrons are located in the upper humus horizon. Peat is an important component of the soil mixture for seed germination and seedling cultivation. The best time for sowing rhododendron seeds in a heated greenhouse (at 18–24°C) is November–December. Early sowing is beneficial because seedlings continue growing and reach larger sizes during the vegetation period.
Since rhododendron seeds are very small and require light for germination, they are sown on the surface of the substrate, with boxes or pots covered with glass. Once most seeds have sprouted, the glass is removed and the boxes are moved to a cooler place (15–17°C), where young plants harden, strengthen, and develop better.
Further care for seedlings consists of maintaining optimal moisture levels. Overwatering leads to diseases and possible death of seedlings within a few days. Watering is best done in the morning with a sprayer, very carefully.
