Is a perennial herbaceous monoecious vine (can be cultivated as an annual) with a tuberous rhizome. Stems reach up to 5 m in length, climbing supports with tendrils. Leaves are deeply palmately divided, 5–7-lobed, with serrated margins. Flowers are regular, unisexual, white or cream-colored, with five petals.

Fruits are ovate, bright orange or red-orange, covered with sparse short blunt spines. When ripe, the fruit splits into three valves that open like petals, revealing seeds coated with a sticky sweet dark ruby aril. At this stage the vine appears strikingly exotic.

Leaves, young shoots, and green unripe fruits are cooked and eaten like spinach. Young leaves contain vitamin C. The ripe red pulp covering the seeds is also edible, though in large amounts it has a laxative effect. The ripe orange flesh of the fruit itself is not consumed, as it is bitter and may cause poisoning. However, it is used in the preparation of medicinal products with unique properties.
