  • Kiwano (African cucumber, horned melon) «Spiny Emerald» / Cucumis ficifolius

This rare plant from the Cucurbitaceae family originates in Ethiopia. Unlike its close relative, the common cucumber, this unique species produces round green fruits covered with small smooth bumps rather than sharp spines.

These aromatic cucumbers weigh about 150 g each and change color as they ripen, from bright green to sunny yellow, while retaining a refreshing cucumber-like aroma.

They taste good both fresh and preserved. They can be added to salads: the crisp flesh gives a refreshing flavor similar to cucumber. They can also be canned or pickled. However, be careful: overripe fruits develop a bitter taste.

Interestingly, ficifolius is also known as the "spiny cucumber." Although its fruits lack spines, the name refers to the spiny stems of the plant.
