Queensland umbrella tree / Schefflera actinophylla
A perennial evergreen plant. When grown indoors, it reaches a height of 1.5–2.5 m. The leaves are large, dark green, glossy, and palmately compound. In summer, the plants can be used to decorate terraces and balconies.
The plant is light-loving but does not tolerate direct sunlight, sudden temperature changes, or drafts. Water abundantly from spring to autumn, only after the soil has dried out, but avoid waterlogging; excess water should always be drained from the saucer. Frequent spraying is recommended, as the plant requires high humidity. In winter, it is preferable to maintain a temperature of 10–15 °C with moderate watering. If the plant is overwintered at a higher temperature, it should be provided with maximum light. Temperatures that are too low can cause leaf drop, while excessively high temperatures can cause the leaves to wilt. In spring and summer, feed the plant with organic or mineral fertilizers twice a month.
The seeds germinate at a temperature of +20–24 °C within two to four weeks. After emergence, the temperature should be reduced to +18–20 °C. Repot the plant every two years in spring. Soil mixture: sod soil, leaf soil, humus, and sand (2:1:1:1). Schefflera practically does not branch. Pruning does not promote bushiness, so to create a fuller effect, plant at least three plants in one pot.
May also be called: umbrella tree, octopus tree.
